Sunday Club – 14th July 2019

Theme: Making Excuses (todays was lesson taken from Sermon4Kids)

We asked "Have any of you been absent from school? As you probably know your parents or guardian would have to contact the school with an excuse".

Christine passed out some examples of excuses that have been written by parents. Some of these were quite hard to believe and also very funny. We read them in turn. (examples shown below)

Making excuses is not new. People even made excuses in Jesus’ day.

Reading: As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever I go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of air their nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their dead, but you go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the Kingdom of God.” (Luke 9 57-62 NIV)

We discussed the reading in to ensure the message was understood .

As you can understand by that reading Jesus was calling those who would give up everything – family, friends and their jobs – and follow him. What he got instead was excuses.

Jesus is still calling us today, “Follow me!” Will you follow, or will you make excuses?

Prayer: Our Father, when Jesus calls us to him, may we never offer excuses. Instead, may we be willing to give up everything and follow. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

Activities:

  • FEET HEART - James traced each foot and then glued the heels; over lapping and the foot "prints" at an outward angle, which  formed a heart. Stickers were be placed on them and the words 'MY HEART WANTS TO FOLLOW JESUS',
  • BIG FOOT POSTER - A larger foot with the words 'I WILL FOLLOW JESUS'  written on; was signed by everyone present.
  • We enjoyed a board game (copied from pinterest); as shown below and used a smooth stone to score or lose points. James won.
