A Clean Heart  -  (Watch what you say)

Today’s focus was Mathew 15 v 14

We welcomed Orla and Leo to Sunday Club.

We began by offering biscuits and sweets to the youngsters and talking about whether or not our hands were clean as well as when we need to wash our hands, agreeing that it’s a good thing to have clean hands before eating.

During the time Jesus lived the religious leaders were very concerned about cleanliness too. They had many religious laws and traditions which they followed to make sure that nothing unclean went into their mouths but Jesus told them somethings are far more important.

The youngsters shared the reading of the story.------

One day some religious leaders were watching Jesus’ disciples at work and they saw that the disciples didn’t keep to the traditional rules of washing their hands before eating.

They went to Jesus and asked him “Why do your disciples not wash their hands in the proper way before they eat?”

Jesus answered them by telling them that what comes out of your mouth is more important than what you put into it.

He said that the words that come out of your mouth come from the heart and those words show whether you are clean or unclean.

We talked about the times we’ve been hurt by someone’s mean and hateful words and enjoyed the activity of posting different words and phrases, people might say, through the mouth of our poster face (shown below) and deciding the correct heart to place them on - an unclean heart or a clean and pure heart

We reminded the youngsters that once you have said the words they can’t be taken back and used a tube of toothpaste to demonstrate.

God hears every word we say and he knows every thought we have in our heart, so it’s very important for us all to be careful about the things we think and say, because hateful words come from an unclean heart.

Prayer     Dear Jesus, let the words that come from my mouth and the thoughts that I have in my heart be pure and clean, and pleasing to you.     Amen

Following the prayer the group made their own moving lips, coloured a picture and worked on a word search.
